PETER CUNNINGHAM

Born in Birmingham, England, Peter Cunningham moved from the industrial Midlands to rural Staffordshire at the age of thirteen. It was here that Peter was able to find beauty in lush, natural landscapes, and beloved gardens. 

After high school, Peter enrolled to the Stafford College of Art, continuing his art education at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London, England, studying fine art painting and drawing. Peter and his family moved to Canada in 1984. He now lives in Ottawa, working from his busy downtown studio.

From walks in nature to a stroll through the garden, his artwork brings a sense of joyful nostalgia with soft, warm tones and dream-like imagery.

Artist statement

“My art reflects my long personal journey of discovery through life. My seemingly random subjects are in fact small pieces of that intimate mosaic that reflects my personal vision. Be it on a visual, spiritual or emotional level, there is always something in the subject that speaks to me and my experience. the struggle, the adventure, is in trying to express that response to the subject within the constraints of the medium. When I set out on this path some 46 years ago, it was without a map or GPS, just my learnt skills with the tools of my craft, the guiding example of my mentors and the whole staggering history of Art behind me. It’s an exciting, and always wondrous journey, where every splash of colour, every problem resolved, and every triumph achieved, is one more step along the road, one more mile on the brush…
