JAYA PERRIER

Family artistic roots run deep. My early guidance comes from my mother, a mixed-media artist. She equipped me with the necessary fundamentals at a young age. With self-directed training and workshops led by renowned artists such as Suchitra Bhosle, Martin Campos, Ingrid Christensen, and Pramod Kurlekar, I have continued to hone my skills over the years.

Before moving to Montréal, my paintings were exhibited in various art galleries in Bermuda, including the Masterworks Museum, the Bermuda Arts Center at Dockyards, and the Bermuda Society of Arts.  My first solo show, entitled “Bermuda in Bloom,” was held in 2018 at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art. Through these galleries, my works were placed in private collections in the US, UK, Canada, and Europe.

I relocated to Montréal in 2019, and since then, my work has been juried into several national-level shows hosted by the Federation of Canadian Artists. Most recently, my work has been exhibited at the Summer & Grace Gallery, located in Oakville, Ontario, and at Viva Vida Gallery & Art Centre in Pointe-Claire, Québec. In Montréal, I actively contribute to the arts as a Board Member of ArtTram, which is a non-profit art organization.

Having lived in four countries, I have had the privilege of meeting numerous people of diverse backgrounds. My interactions have shaped and directed my artistic journey. Primarily, I am drawn to the subtle intimacy of ordinary life and strive to capture the beauty that lingers in the spaces we occupy, both physically and emotionally.

Statement

My work is rooted in the quiet poetry of everyday scenes—sun-drenched interiors, overgrown gardens, and the dialogue between figure and environment. My experience from living in different countries and exploring many others continues to shape my work. Each place I’ve called home adds a layer of perspective. Inspired by Joaquín Sorolla’s masterful handling of light and the bold, expressive strokes of Konstantin Korovin, I aim to move beyond representation – to capture the light and mood of the space. Through each piece, I invite viewers to pause, look closely, and find familiarity in the places we inhabit and remember.

Oil is my medium of choice for its smoothness and elegance, and I use it to explore how light transforms ordinary spaces into something contemplative, even cinematic. Faced with a blank canvas, I approach my subject as a collection of shapes. I use large brushes to mass in the key shapes, focusing foremost on capturing the light as I see it. Time spent on details using smaller brushes is saved for the very end.

A firm believer in painting from life, I organize biweekly live model sketching and painting sessions for the local artist community, an ongoing discipline that has refined my ability to capture key information quickly and accurately. This practice informs my in-studio paintings.

Ultimately, I want my paintings to evoke a sense of intimacy, allowing the viewer to feel the emotion I experienced in the moment of seeing.
